OKC chef named James Beard Award finalist

Three Tulsa chefs had been named named as semi-finalists this year. Oklahoma City chef Jeff Chanchaleune, known for his Ma Der Lao Kitchen, has been named a finalist for the 2024 James Beard Awards. This is not the first time Chanchealeune has been finalist; he and fellow OKC chef Andrew Black were previously finalists in 2023, with Black winning for his work at his flagship restaurant Grey Sweater. Three other Tulsa chefs, Alexandre Figueira, Jordan Hawley, and Jacque Siegfried, were named semi-finalists. The James Beard Award will be presented June 10 at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago. The episode of the Food Network series "Best Bite in Town" will premiere on May 10.

Oklahoma City chef Jeff Chanchaleune, whose Ma Der Lao Kitchen has earned National acclaim, is the sole Oklahoma finalist is the 2024 James Beard Awards.

Chanchaleune is a finalist for Best Chef Southwest, which includes Arizona Nevada and New Mexico as well as Oklahoma.

This is the second time Chanchaleune has been a finalist for this award, considered the “Oscars” of the food world. He and fellow OKC chef Andrew Black were finalists in 2023, with Black ultimately winning for his work at his flagship restaurant Grey Sweater.

Three Tulsa chefs were named as semi-finalists: Alexandre Figueira, chef and owner of Doctor Kustom in Mother Road Market, 1124 S. Lewis Ave.; Jordan Hawley, executive chef of Il Seme, 15 W. Fifth St. and Jacque Siegfried, chef and owner of Natv, 1611 S. Main St., Broken Arrow. Tabb Singleton, owner of Phat Tabb’s BBQ in Idabel, also made the semi-finalist list.

Ma Der Lao Kitchen, 1634 N. Blackwelder Ave. in Oklahoma City, takes it name from the Laotian phrase for “come eat,” and the recipes Chanchaleune uses are inspired by those of his grandmother, mother and father, so that each dish represents a specific family memory.

Ma Derek Lao kitchen was named one of the best restaurants in the U.S. In 2022 by both the New York Times and Bon Appetit magazine, and this was one of USA Today’s Restaurants of the Year.

'Best Bite' Tulsa episode debuts May 10

The Tulsa episode of the new Food Network series "Best Bite in Town," will premiere 8 p.m. Friday, May 10, according to the Food Network website.

The episode, the third in the series, will air several times over that initial weekend. Host Noah Cappe and chefs Aarti Sequiera and Joe Sasto spent several days in Tulsa in the summer of 2023 to film the episode, which featured the trio visiting six restaurants to sample their offerings, and select three dishes that would be judged for the title of "Best Bite in Town."

The restaurants that will be featured in the episode are:

• Amelia’s Wood Fired Cuisine, 122 N. Boston Ave.

• Gambill’s Pastaria, 1921 S. Harvard Ave.

• Lone Wolf Banh Mi, 203 E. Archer St.

• Sisserou’s Caribbean Restaurant, 107 N. Boulder Ave.

• Trencher’s, 2602 S. Harvard Ave.

• Jane’s Delicatessen, which closed in December 2023.

The show, executive produced by Guy Fieri, will also feature Joplin, Mo.; Placerville and Davis, Calif.; Paducah, Ky.; Clarksville, Tenn.; and New Haven, Conn.

Boston Deli Chef's Special

The Chef's Special for April at the Boston Deli, 6231 E. 61st St., will feature a seared chicken breast stuffed with garlic-herb goat cheese, and served with grilled asparagus, roasted red bell pepper and a red bell pepper cream sauce.

Accompanying this will be creamy Brussels sprouts, with mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, thyme and nutmeg; oregano roasted new potatoes with a whipped feta cheese sauce; and a strawberry spinach salad with red onion, goat cheese and roasted tomatoes.

Dessert will be a goat chesse mousse with candied blueberries.

McNellie's celebrates craft beer

McNellie's, 409 E. First St., will host a Craft Beer Patio Party, featuring beers and representatives from about a dozen local craft breweries, beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 4

Participating breweries include American Solera, Angry Scotsman Brewing, Anthem Brewing, Broken Arrow Brewing Co., Cabin Boys Brewery, Heirloom Rustic Ales, Marshall Brewing, NEFF Brewing, The Nook Brew Co., Prairie Artisan Ales, and Renaissance Brewing Co.

Admission is free.

Kilkenny's Irish Bistro menu

Kilkenny's, 1314 E. 15th St., launched its "Irish Bistro" menu Wednesday, which includes variations of familiar dishes from cuisines far removed from Irish shores.

The menu includes such as fried green tomatoes, queso blanco, chicken bacon ranch quesadilla, cheddar sausage in pastry, deviled eggs with blackened shrimp, and fried green beans with wasabi ranch.

En Fuego's new spring hours, specials

En Fuego, 224 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Guthrie Green, will begin operating under its spring and summer hours as the weather turns warmer.

Beginning Sunday, April 7, the restaurant will be open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday.

“We have such a unique and beautiful location with Guthrie Green as our front lawn,” said owner Greg Hughes. “We wanted to expand our hours so people will have plenty of time to enjoy the Green on those spring and summer evenings.”

In addition to the expanded hours, En Fuego will host a happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. each day, with half-priced house and frozen margaritas, half-priced Tecate beer, and free chips and salsa.

Hughes said,. “And starting in April, we will introduce Salsa Sundays where guests will receive free chips and salsa with their purchase.”

Plans are underway for a special two-day Cinco De Mayo party as well, where patrons can celebrate the popular holiday with fresh, Baja Peninsula Mexican cuisine, an extensive tequila catalog, live entertainment and En Fuego-exclusive Cinco Specials.

Chuy's celebrates eclipse

Chuy's, the Austin-based Tex-Mex chain, will be celebration the total solar eclipse with a three-day "Tex-Mex Totality Party," Saturday-Monday, April 6-8.

The event will feature the debut of a new "Eclipse 'Rita," made with LALO Blanco tequila, Gran Gala, fresh lime juice and agave nectar with a float of red wine. The restaurant's Chips 'N' Dips, which include Lil' Chuy Gooey, a take on the traditional seven-layer dip, and Boom-Boom Pow, a vegetarian option, will be available for $5.

Also available for a limited time will be "Dark Side of the Spoon" t-shirts for $15.
