The new program will provide parents with the option to navigate their child's education options, whether public school open enrollment, charter, private or home school, depending on the type of school. Walters stated that the new office will provide an easier way for parents to access their child’s education options and will help reorganize the department to make it easier for parents and communities to navigate resources. Walters also emphasized the department's primary focus is on school choice and assisting parents as much as possible. The state's Department of Education has also announced that it will be one of the first state departments to have created this resource.

WELL, GUYS, IT’S CALLED THE OFFICE OF SCHOOL CHOICE. STATE SUPERINTENDENT RYAN WALTERS SAYS IT WILL BE AN EASIER WAY FOR PARENTS TO ACCESS THEIR CHILD’S SCHOOLING RIGHT HERE THROUGH THIS BUILDING BEHIND ME. NOW, IN TODAY’S STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING, STATE SUPERINTENDENT RYAN WALTERS ANNOUNCED THE LAUNCH OF A NEW PROGRAM THAT HE SAYS PARENTS HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR WHETHER IT’S PUBLIC SCHOOL OPENING, OPEN ENROLLMENT, CHARTER, PRIVATE OR HOME SCHOOL. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SAYS THIS NEW PROGRAM WILL GIVE PARENTS THE OPTION TO GO TO ONE PLACE TO NAVIGATE THEIR CHILD’S SCHOOLING. IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT, SUPERINTENDENT WALTERS SAID OKLAHOMA WILL BE ONE OF THE FIRST STATE DEPARTMENTS TO HAVE CREATED THIS RESOURCE. HE ALSO SAYS THEIR DEPARTMENT IS MEANT TO LEAD IN SCHOOL CHOICE AND TO ASSIST PARENTS AS MUCH AS THEY CAN. AND THIS NEW OFFICE WILL DO JUST THAT. STATE SUPERINTENDENT WALTERS DID SAY THEY’LL HAVE TO MOVE AROUND STAFF FOR THIS OFFICE, AS WELL AS HIRE ADDITIONAL STAFF FOR THIS NEW ADDITION. BUT HE SAYS OVERALL, IT WILL GIVE PARENTS MORE ACCESS TO THEIR CHILD’S SCHOOLING. NOW, WHILE SEVERAL PEOPLE SHOWED UP FOR PUBLIC COMMENT TODAY, NO ONE SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED BEING FOR OR AGAINST THIS SCHOOL CHOICE PLAN IN AT THIS DEPARTMENT, IT WILL BE A ONE STOP SHOP RELATED TO EVERYTHING SCHOOL CHOICE. SO I’M VERY PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THIS WILL HELP REORGANIZE THIS AGENCY TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR TEAM THAT WORKS WITH CHARTER SCHOOLS, OUR TEAM THAT WORKS WITH PRIVATE SCHOOLS, WE’RE ALL IN THE SAME SPOT. SO IT WILL MAKE IT A LOT EASIER FOR PARENTS AND COMMUNITIES TO NAVIGATE THOSE RESOURCES. THERE’S A FEW STATES THAT HAVE THESE, NOT VERY MANY, SO WE’RE EXCITED TO BE ONE OF THE FIRST STATES TO OFFER THIS FOR OUR PARENTS OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA.
