The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is seeking information regarding a 1971 cold case involving 56-year-old Mack Watkins who picked up two hitchhikers from Little Rock, Arkansas. The next day, Watkins was found dead along I-40 near the Sallisaw, Oklahoma rest stop, and his pickup truck was later abandoned in Oklahoma City. Witnesses have suggested that the male hitchhiker may have an Illinois driver’s license with a birth year of 1944 and may have had the word “LOVE” tattooed on his left hand and a birth defect. The OSBI is asking for information.

SALLISAW, Okla. (KFOR) – The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is looking for more information regarding a cold case from 1971.

Officials say on October 29, 1971, 56-year-old Mack Watkins picked up two hitchhikers, a man and a woman, while traveling westbound from Little Rock, Arkansas.

The next day, Watkins was found dead along I-40 near the Sallisaw, Oklahoma rest stop. His orange pickup truck was later discovered abandoned in Oklahoma City.

According to the OSBI, witnesses say the male hitchhiker may have had an Illinois driver’s license with a possible birth year of 1944. Also, he may have had the word “LOVE” tattooed on his left hand and a birth defect on the right. The woman was said to have long red hair.
