Lawmakers to consider funding options for mental health help line

Oklahoma lawmakers must secure $5.7M funding for the 988 mental health crisis line before federal support ends in September. The funding for the Oklahoma mental health crisis hotline, 988, is set to expire at the end of the budget year, meaning state will have to fund the full $5.7 million annually to keep the program running. The state is primarily funded by the state, but federal assistance from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will cease at mid-September. The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services has requested funding in its appropriation request, but lawmakers may also consider other funding options. Rep. Arturo Alonso-Sandoval proposed creating a telecommunications fee to fund 988 but his bill failed to pass a committee.
